Wanda Maximoff, or Scarlet Witch, is a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She debuted in a mid-credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was released in 2014, played by Elizabeth Olsen. Maximoff is a Sokovian who was experimented on and received powers from the Mind Stone. Growing up, she and her brother Pietro developed a hatred for Tony Stark after a Stark Industries mortar shell killed their parents and trapped them for two days straight[1]. Later on, when Sokovia was practically a war zone, Wanda and Pietro volunteered to participate in a HYDRA experiment that gave them powers via the Mind Stone. Pietro received super speed while Wanda received powers such as telekinesis, hypnosis and energy manipulation[2]. In 2015, Wanda and Pietro briefly worked for Ultron against the Avengers but later joined the team after discovering his actual schemes. Pietro sacrificed himself to save Clint Barton while Wanda became a new member of the Avengers[1]. A year later, Wanda had developed a romantic relationship with Vision but the two were on different sides of the Avengers Civil War. However, their relationship was not permanently affected[3]. In 2018, Thanos' forces invaded Earth in search of the Mind Stone, which at the moment resided in Vision's forehead. Vision asked Wanda to destroy the Stone and she reluctantly agreed, as it would kill him. She destroyed the Stone before Thanos got to her but he simply rewound time using the Time Stone and retrieved the Stone, killing Vision anyway. Wanda was met with grief and she soon fell victim to the Decimation[4]. Five years later, in 2023, Wanda was revived by the Hulk, along with all the other victims. She got her revenge on an alternate Thanos, attacking him with her telekinesis. She later attended Tony Stark's funeral[5].
